Merina Vellonen – ”Aavikkounia” 18.8.-30.8.

Aavikkounia on liminaalinen matka unien, näkyjen ja maagisen työskentelyn läpi — prosessi, jossa monista elementeistä kudottu kokonaisuus alkaa vähitellen hahmottua eletyn kokemuksen tasolla. Tilaa kannattelee Jumalatar, yhteisöllinen teos, joka tarkastelee feminiinisyyden arkkityyppejä muuntavan prosessin kautta. 

Teos sai alkunsa italialaisen taiteilijan Monica Gorzan ohjauksessa, ja lopulta se on kertomus yhteisestä naiseudesta, jota rakennamme kollektiivisesti. Sen tarina muotoutuu jokaisen osallistujan mukana heidän unien, intuition ja näkyjen kautta. Aavikkounia edustaa sielun heräämisen aikaa: se aktivoi syvän sisäisen tietämisen virtaa ja rakentaa symbolisen sillan tiedostamattoman ja valveilla olevan tietoisuuden välille. Jokainen arkkityyppi heijastaa matkaa kohti sisäisen voiman, totuuden ja aitouden lähdettä.

”Lähdimme etsimään jumalattaria neula, lanka ja sakset aseinamme. Luonnollisestikaan kyse ei ollut todellisesta metsästyksestä, vaan kohti menemisestä – sallimisesta kohdata itsensä. Juuri niin tein Merinan ja seitsemän muun suomalaisen naisen seurassa. Neula ja langat puhuvat mannertenvälistä kieltä, ehkä jopa planeettojenvälistä, tai paremminkin tähtienvälistä. Se, mikä yhdisti meidät tässä henkisessä ja sielullisessa matkassa, oli juuri yhteisten symbolien täsmällinen ilmaantuminen — eikä se ole itsestään selvää. 

Mukana oli eri-ikäisiä naisia, joilla oli merkittäviä elämäntarinoita: yhtä aikaa dramaattisia ja elinvoimaisia, omine suuntineen ja toiveineen. Yhdessä, henkilökohtaisen tutkimuksen, unitarinoiden, arjen tapahtumien ja ohjattujen visualisointien kautta, otimme yhteyttä pyhään feminiinisyyteemme: näimme sen, kyseenalaistimme sen, kunnioitimme sitä ja nostimme sen esiin.Tätä polkua hahmottelimme seitsemässä tapaamisessa, joissa tarkastelimme suuren esiäidin moniulotteisen kehon eri osia ja ohjasimme hänen pieniä osiaan suoraan jokaiselle meistä. Jokainen nainen sai siis häneltä henkilökohtaisen ohjauksen ja omistautumisen. Kirjoimme ja tulkitsimme tämän viestin yhdessä ja vaihdoimme sen sitten keskenämme. Lopputuloksena syntyi jumalattarien perhe — pieni kahdeksan jumalallisen feminiinisyyden hahmon heimo, joka on hajotettu ja koottu uudelleen: jokainen yksittäinen jumalatar koostuu koko naisten piirin osista.

Maaginen kirjonta on hyvin voimakas tapa ottaa yhteys syvimpiin osiin itsessämme ja antaa niille muoto. Kun tälle polulle astuu, sillä ei oikeastaan ole loppua… Kun kulkee maagisia polkuja, myös katse muuttuu, ja näkeminen — visio — muuttuu lopullisesti.”

Galleriassa nähtävä Jumalatar on yksi näistä heimon jäsenistä. Jumalattaren lisäksi tilaa kannattelee myös muut elementit, jotka ilmentävät ja tukevat teoksen muotoja, symboleja ja initiaation portteja. Ne kutsuvat katsojan astumaan maisemaan, jossa unet, muisti ja muodonmuutos kietoutuvat toisiinsa. Tila on vuoropuhelua itselleni aina läsnäolevan taajuuden kanssa jossa elämä ja kuolema yhdessä hengittävät ja rytmittävät syviä kontrasteja luovaa olemassaolon tasoa.

Viime vuosina taiteellinen työskentelyni on kehittynyt niin, että siinä yhdistyvät maalaus ja kirjonta. Olen samalla käyttänyt luonnosta löytyviä esineitä, kuten luita ja muita orgaanisia muotoja, joita saatan kerätä tai valokuvata. Teoksissani yhdistyvät tekstiilit, luut, lanka, pigmentit, kukilla ja yrteillä värjätyt kankaat, öljyväri sekä kaikki sellaiset materiaalit, jotka herättävät inspiraation, läsnäolon ja ilon tunteen. Minua puhuttelevat materiaalit, joilla on oma historiansa ja henkensä, ja jotka antavat luovan prosessin avautua intuitiivisesti ja orgaanisesti. 

Merina Vellonen on Avoimessa taidekoulussa Helsingissä opiskellut, osittain itseoppinut turkulainen kuvataiteilija.

Aavikkounia (Desert Dream) is a liminal journey through dreams, visions, and magical practice, where a process that weaves together many elements gradually becomes visible within the realm of lived experience. This space is held by Goddess, a collaborative work that explores the archetypes of the feminine through a transformative process. 

Initiated under the guidance of the Italian artist Monica Gorza, the work is ultimately a story of collective womanhood—one that we all create together. Its unfolding narrative is shaped by each participant as they delve into it through their dreams, intuition, and visions. Aavikkounia represents an era of soul awakening, activating the flow of deep inner knowing and creating a symbolic bridge between the unconscious and waking awareness. Each archetype reflects a journey toward the source of inner power, truth, and authenticity.

”Go hunting for goddesses armed with needle, thread and scissors. Naturally it wasn’t a real hunt but a going towards, allowing oneself to meet. This is exactly what I did in the company of Merina and seven other women of Finnish origin. The needle and threads speak a transoceanic language, perhaps even interplanetary or better yet sidereal. What closely united us in this spiritual and soul journey was precisely the punctual presentation of common symbols, which is not to be taken for granted. Women of different ages, with important life stories: dramatic and vital at the same time, with individual directions and desires. Together, mixing personal research, dream stories, daily events and guided visualizations, we contacted our sacred feminine: we saw it, questioned it, honored it and brought it to light.

It is a path that we have outlined in seven meetings, analyzing the individual parts of the body of the great ancestral mother who was multifaceted by directing small parts of herself directly onto each of us. This means that each woman has received personal information and dedication to her. We embroidered and interpreted this information together and then exchanged it. What has been created is a family of goddesses, a small tribe of eight personifications of the divine feminine dismembered and recomposed: each single goddess is made up of the parts of the entire circle of women.

Magical embroidery is a very powerful means of contacting and giving life to the deepest parts of ourselves. It is a path that once undertaken has no end… When you walk on magical paths, your eyes change and your ”sight”, the vision, changes forever.”

The Goddess presented in the gallery is one of the members of this tribe. In addition to the Goddess, the space is also held by other elements that embody and support the forms, symbols, and gateways of initiation within the work. They invite the viewer to step into a landscape where dreams, memory, and transformation intertwine. The space becomes a dialogue with a frequency that is ever-present within me, where life and death breathe together, shaping and giving rhythm to the deep contrasts that create the plane of existence from which creativity emerges.

Over the past few years my artistic practice has evolved into mixing painting and embroidery, while also using found objects from nature such as bones and other organic forms which I may collect or photograph. My work brings together textiles, bones, thread, pigments, naturally dyed fabrics coloured with flowers and herbs, oil paint and any material that evoke a sense of inspiration, presence and joy. I am drawn to materials that carry their own history and spirit allowing the creative process to unfold intuitively and organically.

Merina Vellonen is a visual artist from Turku, who studied art in Helsinki at Avoin taidekoulu, she is partly self-taught.
